International Back-hold Wrestling at Grasmere Sports 2025
Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling is a very local sport. It’s practised and sustained by a few Wrestling Academies from North Lancashire through Cumbria and Northumberland. Wrestlers from these Academies compete every year at Grasmere Sports and these bouts form one of the three exciting traditional sports, along with Hound Trailing and Fell Racing.
What may be less well known is that Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling is part of a tradition of “back-hold wrestling”. This type of wrestling is carried out in other parts of Europe, including Iceland, Brittany, Leon (Spain), Scotland. Wrestlers from these traditions compete throughout the year in these locations and Grasmere Sports is one of the only places that you will be able to experience this unique style when wrestlers from these regions come together for World Championship bouts.
